Synopsis

Sebastian is the youngest fiddler in a baron's household, and he loses his place after one badly timed screech from his instrument. Out on the road he rescues a white cat named Presto, befriends a young man called Nicholas who seems to have reasons for staying out of sight, and meets a girl who keeps changing her name and her story. The country is ruled by a harsh Regent who has arranged an unwelcome marriage for a princess, and a rebel known only as the Captain is working against him. Sebastian also comes across a strange fiddle belonging to a travelling clown, and he is soon caught up in a dangerous game of masks, disguises and music.
