Synopsis
Picking up immediately after the first novel, this second book follows Prince Gevulin as he uses diplomacy to draw together unlikely allies after his party reaches a previously inaccessible land, working toward his plan to challenge the empire that rules the roads. Elen, still grieving a lost love, is taken captive alongside her nephew Kem by the prince, who has learned a dangerous secret from her past that could see her executed if revealed. Using that leverage, and her desire to protect Kem from his abusive father, he compels her cooperation. Pursued by imperial forces and menaced by an invasive, swiftly lethal spore, the group is driven toward a place from Elen's past that she never wanted to see again, as shifting alliances and hidden agendas complicate every step.
