Synopsis

The Near Witch, published by V.E. Schwab in 2011, is set in the isolated town of Near, where sixteen-year-old Lexi has grown up hearing old superstitions about the Near Witch, a figure blamed by generations of townspeople for any misfortune that cannot otherwise be explained. When children in the town begin vanishing without a trace, suspicion falls first on outsiders and then on the old stories themselves, as fear pushes Near's residents toward increasingly desperate explanations for what is happening to their children. Lexi, unconvinced by either the town's scapegoating of strangers or its reflexive blaming of old legend, sets out to find the real cause behind the disappearances herself, a search that draws her directly into the tangled history behind the Near Witch stories she grew up dismissing.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Near Witch): V.E. Schwab's debut novel, a standalone YA fairy-tale-inflected fantasy; confirmed a separate, unrelated universe from her other admitted work, Shades of Magic, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil, and Gallant.
