V. E. Schwab, born Victoria Elizabeth Schwab on July 7, 1987, in California, is an American author of fantasy and speculative fiction for adult, young adult, and children's audiences. Raised in Nashville, Tennessee, she credits her bicultural upbringing, with a British mother and American father, as a lasting influence on her writing. She attended the Harpeth Hall School before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Washington University in St. Louis in 2009 and later completed a master's degree at the University of Edinburgh focused on depictions of monstrosity in medieval art. Her debut novel, The Near Witch, was published by Disney in 2011; she writes adult and young adult fiction as V. E. Schwab and children's books as Victoria Schwab. Major works include the Vicious series (2013–2018), the Shades of Magic trilogy (2015–2017), The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue (2020), which sold over two million copies and was a Locus Award nominee, and Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil (2025). She has won reader-voted genre awards for both Vengeful and Gallant, created the Netflix series First Kill in 2022, and has hosted the podcast "No Write Way with V. E. Schwab" since 2023.
