Synopsis
Gallant, published by V.E. Schwab in 2022, follows Olivia Prior, a mute girl who has grown up at Merilance, an isolated and unwelcoming boarding school, with only her late mother's strange, half-coherent journal to hint at a family she has never known. When Olivia unexpectedly receives an invitation from an uncle she never knew existed, asking her to come live with him at his manor house, Gallant, she leaves Merilance hoping finally to find the family and belonging that have always eluded her. What she finds instead is a crumbling, secretive estate populated by a distant, wary cousin and two caretakers who seem determined to keep her away from certain parts of the grounds, leaving Olivia to piece together on her own why her invitation came only after her uncle's death, and what Gallant's guardians are so intent on hiding.
