Synopsis

A young gentleman of seventeenth-century Kent woos and marries Mirdath the Beautiful, and loses her in childbirth. Grieving, he falls into a dream state and finds his consciousness carried millions of years forward, into the mind of a youth living after the death of the sun. There the last of humanity lives inside the Last Redoubt, a metal pyramid miles high, protected by an electric circle drawn from the dying Earth Current, and outside it stretches the Night Land: eternal darkness, watched by vast unmoving Watchers and stalked by Silent Ones, giants and worse. Trained in the telepathic arts, the youth catches a distant voice from a Lesser Redoubt whose existence had been forgotten, and knows that the girl who speaks, Naani, is Mirdath reborn. When the Lesser Redoubt's power fails, he sets out alone across the Night Land, armed with the diskos, to find her.

Notes

  • Eveleigh Nash, London, 1912; a public-domain work. Registered as the complete novel, not the abridged two-volume Ballantine Adult Fantasy edition (1972) nor the author's own short version The Dream of X (1912). Pre-ISBN work: the ISBN recorded is that of the Night Shade Books collected edition (The Night Land and Other Perilous Romances, 2018), which contains the complete novel.
