Overview
William Hope Hodgson's 1912 novel is a founding work of the dying-earth strand of fantasy: millions of years hence, after the death of the sun, the last of humanity lives inside the Last Redoubt, a metal pyramid miles high, ringed by an electric circle and watched from the eternal dark by vast unmoving Watchers and stalked by Silent Ones and worse. Framed as the dream of a grieving seventeenth-century gentleman, it follows his far-future self across the Night Land to rescue Naani, the reborn spirit of his lost wife, from a forgotten Lesser Redoubt whose power has failed. Praised by Lovecraft and acknowledged by Jack Vance and C. S. Lewis as an influence, and notorious for its archaic style, it is registered here in its complete text rather than the abridged 1972 edition.
