Synopsis
Opening the third act of the Deverry Cycle, this novel follows a young woman named Lillorigga, known as Lilli, who possesses dangerous magical abilities that her own cruel mother seeks to exploit for political gain in a war-torn kingdom. Seeking guidance beyond her mother's control, Lilli turns to the mysterious and ancient Nevyn, who takes her on as a student in the dweomer even as the civil war around her intensifies. She must weigh a painful choice between loyalty to her own clan and support for the true king fighting to reclaim his rightful throne, caught between the promise of sanctuary and the threat of blood feud, and between family loyalty and a love that pulls her elsewhere.

Notes
- From the series record (Act Three: The Dragon Mage): Correction: this is a TRILOGY, distinct from the separate Act Four tetralogy (The Silver Wyrm), some casual summaries wrongly merge the two.
Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

- Internal chronology, within Deverry: position 9 of 16: previous Days of Air and Darkness (1994) · next The Black Raven (1999)
