Synopsis

The city of Cengarn comes under siege in this fourth novel of the Westlands act, as armies both astral and physical mass for and against the goddess Alshandra, who seeks to prevent the birth of a fate-bound child. Dweomermaster Jill and her allies work to defend Princess Carra and her unborn child from these mounting supernatural and military threats, coordinating the kingdom's magical and mortal defenses as the siege tightens around them. The warrior Rhodry, meanwhile, approaches the coming battle astride a dragon, unaware that he is about to face his long-standing enemy Raena, the high priestess of Alshandra's cult, in a confrontation each has been building toward for years. As the astral war intensifies around Cengarn, the fates of Jill, Rhodry, and the besieged city become tightly bound together, with the outcome poised to reshape the balance of power across Deverry and the Westlands alike.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
