Synopsis

The Seven, published in 2017, concludes Peter Newman's Vagrant Trilogy. Generations of war between humanity and the demonic "tainted" have reshaped the world, and now the Seven, a group of immortal beings originally created to defend humankind, awaken from a long slumber to take stock of what has become of it. What they find complicates any simple return to their old purpose: the tainted have interbred with humans, producing hybrid offspring who are neither wholly monstrous nor wholly human. Viewing this mixed population as a threat to human purity, the awakened gods move toward a plan of extermination, forcing Vesper and her allies to weigh loyalty to their protectors against the survival of people the Seven now regard as abominations. The novel brings the trilogy's demon-haunted world to its climax as old certainties about who counts as an enemy are thrown into question.
