Synopsis

Eleven-year-old Kate feels her life is dull and wishes for the kind of adventures found in books. For her birthday, her eccentric uncle Herbert, whom she has never met, sends her a life-size steam locomotive called the Silver Arrow. Her parents want to return it, but Kate and her younger brother Tom decide to keep it. The sentient train carries the two children along a network of magical rail lines to distant lands, together with the talking animals it is taking to new habitats. Along the way Kate and Tom learn about endangered and invasive species and habitat loss, and about looking at the world with fresh eyes.
