Synopsis
The fourth published Narnia novel opens at Experiment House, an English boarding school, where Eustace Scrubb, having been changed by his earlier adventure, and his bullied classmate Jill Pole flee their tormentors through a hidden door and find themselves in Aslan's country at the edge of Narnia. There the great lion charges Jill with a mission, giving her four signs to memorize as guidance, and sends the two children into Narnia itself. Decades have passed since Eustace's last visit: Caspian X is now an old king, and his son and heir, Prince Rilian, vanished ten years earlier while hunting the serpent that killed his mother. Aslan tasks the children with finding Rilian, and, guided by the marsh-wiggle Puddleglum, they set out northward into wild and increasingly perilous country in search of the lost prince.

Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
- Publication order, within the series The Chronicles of Narnia: position 4 of 7: previous The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952) · next The Horse and His Boy (1954)
