Synopsis
The Sleeping Dragon, the first novel in the Guardians of the Flame series, follows a group of American college students who, while playing a fantasy role-playing game, are magically transported by their gamemaster into the actual world their game was modeled on. Cast in the roles of the characters they had created, the students find themselves in genuine danger in a harsh fantasy land where the game's rules no longer protect them, and they must draw on their assigned skills and each other to survive. The novel follows their early struggles to build a community for themselves in this world and their growing opposition to the region's entrenched slave trade, as choices made for a game now carry permanent, real consequences.
