Overview

Guardians of the Flame follows a group of college students who play a fantasy role-playing game and are transported into the world it describes, where they and their descendants go on to change that world's society over generations, ending slavery and remaking its politics across the ten-novel sequence. Joel Rosenberg's series, opening with The Sleeping Dragon in 1983 and running through 2003's Not Really the Prisoner of Zenda, is frequently cited as one of the earliest "gamers transported into their game" portal fantasies, predating the wider LitRPG boom by decades and treating its characters' original-world skills, including firearms knowledge they smuggle in as concepts if not objects, as a genuine advantage in a medieval-magic setting. Later volumes shift focus onto the original characters' children as the saga's timeline stretches across roughly a generation of in-world history.
