Synopsis

The Spirit Thief (2010) is the first novel in Rachel Aaron's The Legend of Eli Monpress series. Eli Monpress is a talented, charming wizard and self-styled greatest thief of his age, working toward a fortune large enough to top every kingdom's wanted list. To raise the bounty on his head still further, he sets his sights on an audacious target: kidnapping the king of Mellinor. The scheme sets off a chain of events that draws the attention of Miranda, a Spiritualist of the Spirit Court determined to capture him and bring him to justice. Eli is joined by his longtime companions, the mercenary swordsman Josef and the near-silent Nico, as the chase unfolds across a world where nearly every object, from doors to rivers, carries a sentient spirit that only trained wizards can hear and command.
