Synopsis

John Gregory's powers are fading, and his own nightmares are becoming real in ways that put Tom Ward in danger. The spook, Tom and Alice travel to the Isle of Mona, where the island's people live in fear of a creature called a buggane and offer suspected witches to it. Gregory hopes the journey might restore what he has lost, while Tom is troubled by how the islanders treat anyone they accuse. Old enemies from the County also reappear and reach toward the island. Tom must judge who is truly dangerous and who is only suspected, while Gregory's strength and his own judgement are tested by what waits for them on Mona.

Notes

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
