Synopsis

Tom Ward's mother, known as Mam, has long kept secrets about her past. When an ancient evil stirs far from the County, she asks Tom for help, and Tom, John Gregory and Alice Deane travel together to Greece. The journey takes them far from the Lancashire hills and the familiar tools of the spook's trade, and into a country with its own gods and its own old magic. They must find and face an Old God whose power threatens the world beyond any single country's borders. Along the way Tom begins to learn the truth about his mother, where she came from and what she has carried for most of her life.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
