Synopsis
The Ten Thousand Doors of January, published in 2019, is set in the early twentieth century and follows January Scaller, a girl raised in the vast mansion of the wealthy collector Cornelius Locke, her legal guardian, while her father Julian travels the world acquiring artifacts on Locke's behalf and remains largely absent from her life. Though her upbringing appears privileged, January is closely watched and constrained by Locke and the scholarly society of collectors who surround him, with only her dog Bad, the grocer's boy Samuel, and later a guardian named Jane for company. Around her seventeenth birthday, January finds a strange book titled The Ten Thousand Doors hidden in a chest, and its account of doors connecting different worlds echoes a doorway she once encountered as a small child.
