Overview
The Ten Thousand Doors of January is a standalone portal fantasy by Alix E. Harrow following January Scaller, ward of a wealthy collector, as she discovers a mysterious book that reveals the existence of hidden Doors connecting worlds, and the secret society working to seal every one of them shut. Published in 2019, the novel is structured partly as a book-within-a-book, interleaving January's present-day story with the found manuscript she reads, and uses the Doors as a metaphor for the erasure of marginalized histories and identities in the early twentieth-century setting. It was a heavily awards-nominated debut, earning nominations for the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Awards for Best Novel, and it established Harrow, a historian by training, as a major new voice in literary-leaning fantasy.
