Overview
The Morgaine Cycle is C.J. Cherryh's sword-and-sorcery/planetary-romance hybrid about Morgaine, a time- and space-traveling warrior charged with destroying the dangerous Gate network left behind by a vanished civilization, and Vanye, the reluctant, disgraced swordsman who becomes her companion. Four novels appeared between 1976 and 1988: Gate of Ivrel (1976), Cherryh's debut novel, followed by Well of Shiuan (1978), Fires of Azeroth (1979), and Exile's Gate (1988). Cherryh has cited Edgar Rice Burroughs and Andre Norton as influences on the Gates' blend of apparent magic with an underlying technological logic, placing the series at the boundary between fantasy and science fiction. The work earned Cherryh membership in the Swordsmen and Sorcerers' Guild of America, and its lasting reputation has produced omnibus reprintings, a graphic-novel adaptation, and screen rights optioned as recently as 2013.
