Synopsis

The Towers of the Sunset, the second novel in L. E. Modesitt Jr.'s Saga of Recluce, is set generations before the events of The Magic of Recluce and tells the origin story of the island nation itself. It follows Creslin, the strong-willed son of a military leader from the mountain stronghold of Westwind, who rejects an arranged marriage planned for him and chooses exile rather than submit, setting out to discover both his own identity and the extent of his considerable talent for weather-based order magic. As Creslin travels through the lands of Candar, he becomes entangled, largely without realizing it at first, in the ambitions of secretive white wizards who are quietly working toward subjugating the wider world through chaos magic.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Saga of Recluce): One continuous, internally chronological world across many reading-order sub-arcs; the whole published run to date is Core Canon, per the author's own single ordered list. Ongoing; a further volume (Last of the First) is announced for 2026 and is not yet published, so it is not registered (Constitution Article 2).

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
