Synopsis
The Weavers of Saramyr is the first book in Chris Wooding's adult fantasy trilogy The Braided Path, published in 2004. Set in the ancient empire of Saramyr, it centers on the Weavers, a sect of male magicians attached to the imperial throne who hunt down and kill children born with unusual magical gifts, deeming such gifts too dangerous to allow to mature, until the reigning Empress gives birth to a daughter who possesses such powers herself. Forced to choose between the Weavers' demands and her own child, the Empress's decision sets off a chain of political and supernatural consequences that ripple outward across Saramyr's fractious nobility, its foreign-influenced beliefs and its long history of magic suppressed at the cost of the very people it might have protected.
