Synopsis
Orphaned siblings Ben, aged eight, and Jennet are sent to the seaside town of Whitby to live with Miss Alice Boston, an eccentric former lecturer. Ben can see the spirits of the dead, including their parents, a gift that has unsettled earlier foster families and made Jennet wary of him. In Whitby he befriends the Fisher Folk, a reclusive tribe of dwarf-like beings under a curse that kills mothers and newborns in childbirth. Meanwhile a newcomer, Mrs Rowena Cooper, wins the trust of the town's elderly women, and Miss Boston and her friend Mrs Joyster begin to suspect her. Strange events, a huge black dog and a threatened nun draw the children into the danger.
