Synopsis
Set in Whitby just before Bonfire Night, a few months after the events of the first book, the story finds the Fisher Folk girl Nelda facing a forced marriage to the aged and wicked Esau Grendel after failing to fetch the moonkelp. Far beneath the earth, an ancient fish demon awakens and begins to haunt the town, preying on its cats. Nathaniel Crozier, husband of the dead Rowena Cooper, arrives to learn what became of his wife. He tricks Aunt Alice into leaving for London and discovers that her staff is one of four magical guardians made to defend the world against a great evil.
