Synopsis

The second book of the Mage Wars trilogy is set about a decade after the Cataclysm that killed the mage Urtho, as his surviving people, gryphons and humans alike, have built a new home, the terraced city of White Gryphon, on a cliff above the Western Ocean. The gryphon Skandranon and his close human companion, the healer Amberdrake, are called on to represent their fledgling city when a fleet belonging to the distant Black Kings arrives and claims the surrounding region as its own territory. As the two volunteer for the delicate diplomatic mission this requires, the discovery that a noble opposed to any alliance with White Gryphon has been murdered complicates their efforts, drawing them into a confrontation with a faction wielding a dangerous and forbidden form of blood magic.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
