Synopsis
Set in the nineteenth century within the same magical world as Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and Piranesi, this short story follows two sisters, Merowdis and Ysolde. Merowdis, regarded almost as a saint by her family, feels trapped between an unwanted marriage and life in a convent, and one winter afternoon walks into the woods with her pets, where she meets supernatural forest presences offering her another path.
Where it sits
- Universe: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
- Series: not part of a registered series (standalone work within its universe)
- Author: Susanna Clarke
Notes
- 64-page illustrated short story (illus. Victoria Sawdon), originally a BBC radio broadcast (December 2022). Registered as in-universe on the publisher's explicit framing ('set in the world of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell'), flagged as publisher-asserted and textually tenuous, since reviewers find no direct links in the text itself.
Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
- Publication order, within Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (standalone work): position 3 of 3: previous The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories (2006)
