Synopsis
Through Gates of Garnet and Gold continues the Wayward Children series first begun with Every Heart a Doorway, following the same premise established across the earlier volumes: a student of Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children whose journey through a door into a magical world, and subsequent return to the ordinary one, has left them caught between two lives, neither of which fully fits anymore. Consistent with the series' structure, the novella follows that student's particular world and its own internal rules as a lens for examining the themes of belonging, loss, and identity that have run throughout the wider series since its first volume, continuing the pattern of pairing a fresh magical setting with the school's established cast and premise.

Notes
- From the series record (Wayward Children): Core Canon = all 11 published novellas (Tor.com/Tordotcom, 2016-2026), per the collection/short-form-as-Core precedent (this series' primary reading unit has always been the novella, not the novel). Book 12, "A Song of Sugar Sparrows" (planned January 2027), is announced but unpublished as of 2026-08-11 -- isn't counted here yet; watch for its publication.
