Synopsis
Orual, eldest daughter of the violent King Trom of Glome, a small pagan kingdom on the edges of the Greek world, sets down in her old age a formal complaint against the gods. She has always been ugly, and her only comforts in her father's palace are her Greek tutor, a slave known as the Fox, and her beautiful young half-sister Istra, known by the Greek name Psyche, whom Orual loves as a daughter. When famine and plague strike Glome and the people begin to worship Psyche's beauty, the priest of the goddess Ungit declares her guilty of blasphemy and demands that she be given as a sacrifice to the god of the Grey Mountain. Over Orual's and the Fox's protests, the King agrees. Orual later climbs the mountain to find what remains of her sister.
