Synopsis
Titus Alone, the third Gormenghast novel, follows Titus after he abandons his ancient, crumbling castle home, the only world he has ever known, and sets out through desert wastes and, later, by canoe, away from the rituals and expectations that once defined his entire existence. His journey eventually brings him to a strikingly modern city of towering structures and advanced technology, utterly unlike anything Gormenghast prepared him for, where he must learn to navigate a world of both helpful and dangerous strangers without the protections his birthright once guaranteed him. Stripped of his former status and treated as an outsider, Titus is forced to reckon with who he is once the castle and its rituals no longer define him.
Where it sits
- Universe: Gormenghast
- Series: The Gormenghast Novels core; position 3 of 3 in the series' recorded order
- Author: Mervyn Peake
Notes
- Canonical text = the 1970 Langdon Jones restoration from Peake's manuscript; the 1959 first edition was heavily cut by an in-house editor while Peake was incapacitated. Registered under 1959, the year Peake's work first appeared, with the restored text as definitive.
- From the series record (The Gormenghast Novels): The three novels wholly written by Mervyn Peake (1946-1959), following Titus Groan, 77th Earl of Gormenghast, from birth in the vast ritual-bound castle to his flight from it. Canonical text of Titus Alone is the 1970 restoration edited by Langdon Jones from Peake's own manuscript: the 1959 first edition was heavily and clumsily cut in-house (whole chapters omitted, Peake's deliberate references to modern technology removed) while Peake was already incapacitated by the illness that killed him in 1968, the restoration recovers Peake's own text rather than adding other hands, per the established author-text fidelity rule.
