Mervyn Peake (July 9, 1911 – November 17, 1968) was a British writer, poet, painter, and illustrator, born in Kuling, China, to missionary parents, and educated at Eltham College from 1923 to 1929, the Croydon School of Art, and the Royal Academy Schools from 1929 to 1933. He first gained recognition as a painter and portraitist in London during the 1930s and 1940s. During the Second World War he served in the Army before working as a graphic artist for the Ministry of Information and the War Artists' Advisory Committee, and he later held teaching positions in life drawing at various art schools. Peake is best known for the Gormenghast series — Titus Groan (1946), Gormenghast (1950), and Titus Alone (1959), with a fourth volume, Titus Awakes, completed posthumously in 2011 from his notes by his wife, Maeve Gilmore. The series, set within the vast, decaying castle of Gormenghast, is renowned for its baroque prose style and richly grotesque characterization. His other works include the novel Mr Pye (1953), the children's book Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor (1939), and acclaimed illustrations for editions of Lewis Carroll and Robert Louis Stevenson. In 2008, The Times named Peake among 'The 50 greatest British writers since 1945,' and he is widely considered one of the foundational figures of secondary-world fantasy alongside J.R.R. Tolkien and Robert E. Howard. He died in Burcot, Oxfordshire, in 1968.
