Where it sits
- Universe: Gormenghast
- Series: not part of a registered series (standalone work within its universe)
- Author: Maeve Gilmore
- Author: Mervyn Peake
Notes
- Written almost entirely by Maeve Gilmore (Peake's widow) in 1970-1976 under her own title 'Search Without End', from a ~3-page fragment Peake drafted circa 1960; Peake Studies is emphatic the novel is 'all her own work'. Rediscovered in the family attic and published for Peake's 2011 centenary with Peake's fragment as chapter 1. Credited Gilmore-first per the established completer-credit rule, never to be listed as by Peake alone.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
- Publication order, within Gormenghast (standalone work): position 5 of 5: previous Titus Alone (1959)
