Synopsis

The dead are restless in the magic-rich realm of Thay, ruled by its council of wizard-princes, the zulkirs, and an evil necromancer begins to gather them to his cause, one that will change the face of Faerûn. As a mysterious invasion of undead begins to plague the land, Szass Tam, the zulkir of necromancy, asks the council to name him regent with the powers that would give him, in order to save the nation, and so begins his rise. Following the bard Bareris and the griffon-rider Aoth, the first book of Richard Lee Byers's Haunted Lands trilogy explores Thayan politics and the war that follows.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
