Synopsis

The second book of Richard Lee Byers's Haunted Lands trilogy. For ten years Szass Tam, the lich and zulkir of necromancy, backed by some of Thay's provincial governors, the tharchions, has been at war with all the other zulkirs for control of the magic-rich realm. Weakened himself, he suffers a series of defeats on the battlefield, while the bard Bareris Anskuld and the griffon-rider Aoth Fezim are drawn ever deeper into a civil war fought by the living and the dead, whose outcome will decide whether Thay belongs to its wizard council or to the necromancer.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series The Haunted Lands: position 2 of 3: previous Unclean (2007) · next Unholy (2009)
  • Internal chronology, within Forgotten Realms: position 88 of 215: previous The Ruby Guardian (2004) · next Hand of the Hunter (2010)
