Synopsis
Seventeen-year-old Umlaut, whose magic talent lets him briefly emulate other creatures, is tasked by the Good Magician with delivering a set of letters from Mundania to various people across Xanth, after one letter enraged the Demon Jupiter into hurling a destructive storm toward the land. Accompanied by a talented water serpent, a cat, and others he meets along the way, Umlaut crosses Xanth facing obstacles and discovering unsettling truths about his own origins as he tries to complete the deliveries before disaster strikes.
