Synopsis
Updraft, published by Fran Wilde in 2015, opens the Bone Universe trilogy in a city built from towers of living bone that rise high above the clouds, its citizens navigating between them on hand-built wings rather than any ground-level roads. Kirit Densira is an ambitious young woman hoping to follow her mother into the respected trade of the city's traders, a path that requires her to pass a series of formal tests before she can begin flying trade routes of her own. Before she can complete them, Kirit breaks one of the city's rules during a test flight, drawing the attention of the Singers, a secretive order that claims to protect the city. Rather than punishing Kirit, the Singers take an unusual interest in a rare ability she displays, pressuring her to abandon her trading ambitions and join their ranks instead.

Notes
- From the series record (The Bone Universe): A complete trilogy set in a sky-city of towers grown from living bone, where citizens fly on artificial wings; a coming-of-age story that widens into political and ecological upheaval across the 3 books. Fran Wilde's separate 'Gem Universe' (The Jewel and Her Lapidary and its sequels) is a distinct, unrelated setting by the same author and is not covered by this admission.
