Synopsis
Valiant: A Modern Tale of Faerie, published by Holly Black in 2005, is set in the same world as Tithe but follows a new protagonist. Valerie "Val" Russell is a New Jersey high schooler whose comfortable life collapses when she discovers her mother having an affair with her own boyfriend. Devastated, Val runs away to New York City, where she falls in with a group of homeless teenagers squatting in an abandoned subway station. Through her new companions she is introduced to Never, an addictive drug distilled from a faerie substance, and to Ravus, a solitary troll who teaches her swordplay. When faeries connected to this underground world begin turning up poisoned, suspicion falls on Ravus, and Val is drawn into investigating the deaths herself, straddling the human runaways she lives among and the faerie world she is only beginning to understand.
