Synopsis
Vallista is set immediately before the events of Hawk and finds Vlad Taltos drawn into a mysterious, seemingly empty manor overlooking the Great Sea, a structure tied to House Vallista and its particular character traits, which the book's plot and mystery closely reflect. Much of the story unfolds within this unsettling house as Vlad tries to make sense of its strange, shifting nature while still contending with the Jhereg's desire to see him dead. Devera, a young girl with a mysterious connection to Vlad and to matters beyond ordinary time and space, takes on a larger role here than in any previous Vlad novel, drawing him into questions about the house that go beyond simple architecture. As Vlad investigates the manor's secrets, he must rely on his usual mixture of wit, caution, and sorcery to navigate a puzzle unlike anything he has faced before.

Notes
- From the series record (Vlad Taltos): 17 novels (1983-2024) of a planned 19-book structure (17 House-named books + Taltos, named for the protagonist, + a final closing volume, The Last Contract, not yet written; Chreotha, the 18th, is also not yet written). Internal chronology is contested among fan sources and explicitly not recorded here, see the notes on Jhereg.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
