Synopsis
Hawk finds Vlad Taltos returning to his home city to see his estranged wife Cawti and their son, even though doing so means walking into the reach of the Jhereg organization that still wants him dead for his past betrayal. Rather than continuing to flee as he has for several previous books, Vlad decides to confront the situation directly and find a way to be forgiven, or at least tolerated, by the Jhereg without losing his life in the process. To pull this off, he devises an elaborate scheme built around unlikely elements, including a hawk egg and old allies like the sorcery-adept Daymar of House Hawk, all while narrating events with his usual unreliable, self-deprecating wit. The novel follows Vlad's convoluted planning as he tries to secure a future in which he can remain close to his son and the city he still calls home.

Notes
- From the series record (Vlad Taltos): 17 novels (1983-2024) of a planned 19-book structure (17 House-named books + Taltos, named for the protagonist, + a final closing volume, The Last Contract, not yet written; Chreotha, the 18th, is also not yet written). Internal chronology is contested among fan sources and explicitly not recorded here, see the notes on Jhereg.
Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
- Publication order, within the series Vlad Taltos: position 14 of 17: previous Tiassa (2011) · next Vallista (2017)
