Synopsis
In the ninth book of the Shadows of the Apt series, the Wasp Empire's armies march on Collegium once again, having learned from their earlier failures, with an Empress determined not to repeat past weaknesses. Stenwold Maker's aviators have so far kept control of the skies, but the Empire has developed a formidable new aerial weapon intended to even the odds and bring that dominance to an end. Away from the main battlefield, deep in an ancient forest where rival Mantis clans are locked in their own civil war, Empress Seda searches for a lost and dangerous power left over from an older age of the world. Cheerwell Maker becomes convinced that Seda must be stopped at any cost, even as she senses that their looming confrontation risks awakening something considerably more destructive than either the Empire or the war currently consuming the Lowlands.
