Synopsis
What the River Knows is set in an alternate 1884 Egypt where ancient magic lingers in certain objects, and follows Inez Olivera, a wealthy young woman from Buenos Aires whose parents die under mysterious circumstances tied to their work as antiquities collectors. Determined to learn the truth, Inez travels to Cairo, where she is drawn into her late parents' world of excavation and artifact trading, and discovers she can use a magical ring that once belonged to her mother to sense hidden truths about the past. Her investigation brings her into uneasy alliance with Whitford Hayes, her uncle's aide and a former adversary, as she navigates the dangers of Egypt's antiquities trade and the deeper mystery behind her parents' deaths, uncertain how far she can trust those helping her along the way.
