Synopsis
The first book of the Mage Winds trilogy is set some years after the Last Herald-Mage trilogy, in a Valdemar that has lived without high magic since its founder sacrificed himself to seal the kingdom off from a dangerous sorcery long ago. Princess Elspeth, a Herald and heir to the throne, possesses raw magical potential of her own but no way to develop it within Valdemar's borders, since no one remaining in the kingdom can teach true magecraft. Recognizing that the kingdom may eventually need a mage of its own to face threats that swordcraft cannot answer, Elspeth sets out from Valdemar in search of a teacher who can awaken and train her latent Gift, a journey that will take her far from home into unfamiliar and magically dangerous territory among peoples very different from her own.
