Synopsis
Brak travels south toward Khurdisan the Golden through a desolate land where malevolent magic strikes at him, with falling boulders and an invisible monster that kills his pony. He rescues a shepherdess from a creature called the Manworm and reaches the city of Lord Strann. The city is threatened by the alchemist Nordica and her servant, the wizard Tamar Zed. Nordica is believed to have murdered her father to keep his secret of turning base metal into gold. Brak is captured and held with three others marked for sacrifice in a rite to make the gold, and they plan an escape. The sorceress may have a link to Brak's own past.
