Synopsis

Working for the Devil, published in 2005, introduces necromancer Dante Valentine, known professionally as Danny, in a gritty future San Francisco where humans born with psychic powers have gained limited legal protection but remain objects of suspicion and exploitation. Danny, who tracks fugitives and communes with the dead for a living, finds her routine bounty-hunter existence upended when she is hired directly by the Devil himself, Lucifer, to eliminate a rogue demon that has proven impossible to kill through any ordinary means. Bound by an infernal contract she cannot simply refuse, and partnered against her will with Japhrimel, a fallen demon assigned to ensure she completes the job, Danny must find a way to fulfill an assignment that seems, by every reasonable measure, genuinely impossible.
