Overview

Archer's Goon is a stand-alone 1984 urban fantasy novel by Diana Wynne Jones. Thirteen-year-old Howard Sykes discovers that his English town has secretly been ruled for decades by seven feuding wizard siblings, after one of them, dissatisfied with his father's writing, sends a hulking enforcer, the Goon, to their door. The plot follows from Howard's father's quarterly obligation to deliver two thousand words to the mysterious Archer in exchange for a tax exemption; when the arrangement breaks down, Howard uncovers the siblings' rule over different aspects of the town's civic life and his own unexpected place within their family. The novel was a finalist for the 1985 World Fantasy Award, was named an ALA Notable Children's Book and ALA Best Book for Young Adults, and won a Boston Globe-Horn Book Award honor. The BBC adapted it into a six-part television series in 1992, with Jones closely involved in the production, and Neil Gaiman has called it probably his favourite children's book read as an adult.
