Overview
Doll Bones is a standalone dark fantasy for middle-grade readers by Holly Black, already credited in this canon for several other faerie-inflected series. Three friends, Zach, Alice, and Poppy, have long shared an elaborate imaginative game built around a bone-china doll they call the Great Queen. When social pressure pushes Zach to abandon the game as too childish, Poppy claims she's having troubling dreams: the doll, she says, is haunted by the spirit of a dead girl whose remains are mixed into its china. To lay the ghost to rest, the three sneak away on a real, unsupervised journey to bury the doll near the girl's grave, and the line between their game and something genuinely uncanny starts to blur.
