Overview
Elizabeth Hand's 1994 dark fantasy, winner of the James Tiptree, Jr. Award and the Mythopoeic Award, is set at the University of the Archangels and St. John the Divine, a Gothic campus in Washington, D.C. modelled on the author's own alma mater. Freshman Sweeney Cassidy falls in with two magnetic students, Angelica and Oliver, and discovers that the university is a stronghold of the Benandanti, an ancient brotherhood that has secretly steered civilisation for millennia and suppressed the cult of the Moon Goddess, whose return is now at hand. Part horror, part coming-of-age story, it follows the struggle over decades and takes neither side's innocence for granted.
