Overview
Emily Tesh's second universe in this canon, alongside Silver in the Wood and its Greenhollow duology, is a standalone 2025 dark-academic fantasy novel following Saffy Walden, director of magic at Chetwood, an elite English boarding school, as she battles demons drawn toward the school's most gifted students, including one she has quietly, unofficially been training herself. The novel foregrounds an adult protagonist balancing institutional politics, overwork and genuine care for her students against a magic system in which power itself acts as a lure for hostile, hungry entities. Tesh, a Hugo and British Fantasy Award-winning author for her earlier novella work, drew comparisons on release to boarding-school magic narratives from Harry Potter to Naomi Novik's Scholomance, while distinguishing itself through its administrator's-eye view of magical education rather than a student protagonist's.
