Overview
Kij Johnson's two Heian-era novels, catalogued as one universe under the one-world rule. The Fox Woman (2000), her debut and winner of the Crawford Award, reworks the Japanese tale of the fox who takes human form to win a nobleman, told through the diaries of the fox Kitsune, the discontented courtier Kaya no Yoshifuji and his wife Shikujo. Fudoki (2003), set in the same world and a finalist for the World Fantasy Award, follows Harueme, a dying elderly princess at the imperial court, as she fills her last notebooks with the story of Kagaya-hime, a tortoiseshell cat transformed into a woman who journeys across Japan in search of a new fudoki, the clan story that gives a being its place in the world. Johnson has described the two as the first books of a 'Love/War/Death' sequence.
