Overview
Katherine Rundell's Impossible Creatures books take place in the Archipelago, a secret cluster of thirty-four islands hidden in the Atlantic where the creatures of myth, griffins, sphinxes, centaurs, dragons, krakens and stranger beasts, have lived for thousands of years, sustained by the glimourie, a primal magic flowing from the Glimourie Tree. Christopher Forrester, sent to stay with his grandfather in Scotland, learns that his family guard one of the ways through to it; Mal Arvorian, a girl of the Archipelago who can fly with the help of a magic cape, is pursued by a man who wants to kill her, while the glimourie fades and its creatures begin to die. Planned as five books, the series has been compared by its publishers' reviewers to Tolkien and Pullman; its first book was the Waterstones Book of the Year.
