Overview
Brandon Mull's Beyonders trilogy follows Jason Walker, an ordinary thirteen-year-old boy swallowed by a hippo at his local zoo and mysteriously transported to Lyrian, a parallel medieval world under the rule of the tyrant Maldor. In its opening volume, A World Without Heroes (2011), Jason learns of a secret word of power capable of destroying Maldor if spoken in his presence, and sets out on a dangerous quest across Lyrian's wilderness to recover its scattered syllables. Lyrian is a largely untamed, nature-dominated realm governed by Edomic, a near-forgotten language that grants control over matter and energy, and populated by unusual peoples such as the Displacers and Amar Kabal alongside more familiar fantasy races. The trilogy pairs YA adventure-quest structure with darker themes of sacrifice and moral responsibility as Jason is repeatedly forced to choose between his own safety and the greater good, marking a notably grimmer register than Mull's earlier Fablehaven series.
